By supporting OpenSats’ operations and grant-making activities, the gift will allow for ongoing funding of a variety of free and open-source projects, ranging from research and teaching to protocol development and privacy tools.

OpenSats maintains its open, public-interest goal by distributing all of its funding directly to grantees and funding its operations with individual donations.

“We at Tether believe that Bitcoin, and the free, open-source software that powers it, are indispensable to a freer and decentralised future,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. “OpenSats is on the front line supporting the continued growth of this ecosystem by funding the next generation of innovators, and we are proud to support their work.”

OpenSats was founded to develop a transparent and long-lasting funding strategy for developers of free and open-source software and Bitcoin.  A nine-member board reviews and awards all grants, and donors can donate to a general fund or support particular project areas.

High-impact, open-source Bitcoin projects and a diverse group of contributors, developers, researchers, educators, designers, and reviewers, who are aiming to improve the Bitcoin ecosystem and increase accessibility, are the focus of funding.

“OpenSats has provided over 300 grants to developers working on freedom tech projects. Support from Tether will help us continue to scale our mission globally,” said Matt Odell, CoFounder of OpenSats.

Hines, a former White House crypto expert, has been hired by Tether to lead its U.S. operations.

After less than seven months, Hines departed the Trump administration on August 9 to explore a position in the private sector. Since then, he has opted for Tether.

Additionally, Tether and the Zanzibar e-Government Authority, or eGAZ, signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

The pact intends to encourage financial innovation and digital asset education in poor nations.  It is a significant step toward Tether’s goal of bolstering Africa’s digital economy with contemporary technologies and clear regulations.

The gift from Tether underlines the company’s longstanding support for Bitcoin, open-source development, and public goods that promote financial independence.

Tether’s donation shows its commitment towards the industry and that it is ready to take that extra step to educate people on cryptocurrencies and the blockchain industry so which was necessary in the space.
