FBI Briefly Probed ‘Hawk Tuah Girl’ After Failed Memecoin Launch

Haley Welch, known online as the “Hawk Tuah Girl,” revealed that the FBI briefly probed her following the failed launch of a cryptocurrency token bearing her image.

The investigators visited her grandmother’s home after the Hawk Tuah (HAWK) token lost nearly all its value. They wanted to know what role she played in the project that many say was an exit scam. Welch handed over her phone, answered questions, and was cleared by the agents.

Background of the Memecoin

Welch rose to internet fame after a video clip of her in a street interview went viral. In that clip, she described a sexual technique with her trademark phrase. The video spread widely on social media and made her a minor celebrity.

Capitalising on her popularity, organisers proposed the HAWK memecoin in early December. They claimed it would reward supporters of Welch’s catchphrase.

FBI Investigation

In her “Talk Tuah” podcast, Welch said that, shortly after the token’s debut, FBI agents knocked on her grandmother’s door. Frightened by the sudden visit from federal agents, her grandmother called Welch in a panic.

Welch then met with the investigators, cooperated fully, and allowed them to search her phone. The agents asked her many questions related to how the coin had been managed. After reviewing the evidence and talking to her, they cleared her of wrongdoing.

Token Launch and Backlash

The HAWK token appeared in early December, just as many memecoins were catching the public’s eye. But almost immediately, its value plunged by more than 90%.

Blockchain analysts discovered that insider wallets and early traders dumped large amounts of HAWK tokens right after launch. Crypto commentators soon branded the project an exit scam.

Welch, who admitted she understood almost nothing about cryptocurrency, said she “trusted the wrong people” to handle the project.

Welch’s Role

According to Welch, she was not directly involved in managing the memecoin. She explained that a team behind the token provided her with scripts and bullet points to record promotional clips.

She would film short videos of herself, often without knowing the exact details of what she was saying. She did not even have a Twitter account downloaded, and the coin’s organisers managed her social media.

Welch said she merely followed directions from people whose identities she was not allowed to reveal.

Unexpected Confrontation

During a Twitter Spaces livestream on the day of the token launch, YouTuber Coffeezilla joined the call to investigate the project. Welch said she was told nothing about Coffeezilla’s background or reputation.

When Coffeezilla began asking tough questions about HAWK, Welch felt blindsided. She described feeling unprepared and watching as Coffeezilla “ate her up” with pointed inquiries. At that moment, she realised things had gone off the rails.

Financial and Personal Fallout

Despite her heavy promotion of the HAWK token, Welch said she did not profit from the launch. Any payment she received was used to cover legal fees and crisis public relations.

She voiced regret for fans who invested in HAWK and lost money. Welch said she felt misled and used by the people organising the token.

The stress of the situation led to death threats online and harassment, including being screamed at in an airport. She described the emotional panic she experienced as the token collapsed.

Aftermath and Regret

In her podcast episode, Welch stressed that she had nothing to hide. She said she cooperated fully with the FBI and answered all questions truthfully.

She blamed herself for trusting people who did not have her best interests at heart. Her experience left her wary of similar fast-money schemes. She warned others to do thorough research and to avoid projects driven by hype alone.
