The Ethereum Foundation is going through a major internal reorganization with the goal of improving its technical leadership and fortifying its connections with the wider ecosystem.

According to the official announcement, its research and development division has been rebranded into five specialized teams as part of this redesign, each focusing on crucial areas: Application Research Group (ARG), Consensus Development, Cryptography, Protocol Security, and RIG.

As part of its restructuring, the Ethereum Foundation has laid off several staff and rebranded its Protocol Research & Development (PR&D) team to ‘Protocol.’

The new team will focus on scaling Layer 1, enhancing user experience, and increasing blobspace capacity.

Ethereum Foundation Strengthens Leadership to Advance Strategic Goals and Boost Accountability

The Ethereum Foundation emphasized the need for trusted leadership to drive its strategic goals effectively. To boost accountability and execution, it has appointed specific individuals to lead key initiatives.

Tim Beiko and Ansgar Dietrichs will head efforts to scale Ethereum’s Layer 1.

Alex Stokes and Francesco D’Amato will focus on Layer 2 scaling, while Barnabé Monnot and Josh Rudolf will lead user experience improvements.

All three tracks will be supported by Dankrad Feist, who will serve as a strategic advisor. These leaders will work alongside project leads responsible for implementing defined goals.

These changes, initiated by co-founder Vitalik Buterin, aim to bolster the Foundation’s technical proficiency, improve communication with the community, and uphold Ethereum’s core values of decentralization and open-source development .

While some community members have expressed concerns about the clarity and implications of these shifts, the Foundation maintains that these reforms are essential for Ethereum’s continued growth and resilience in the evolving blockchain landscape.

The reorganization of the Ethereum Foundation comes after co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently stated at ETHGlobal Prague that Ethereum’s Layer 1 might grow by almost ten times in the upcoming year.

It is anticipated that this scalability increase will lower transaction costs and greatly increase network efficiency.

The reorganization is also consistent with Buterin’s earlier statements from January 2025, in which he alluded to changes in leadership and the necessity of modifying the Foundation’s organizational design to accommodate Ethereum’s increasing complexity and worldwide influence.

The restructuring, taken as a whole, puts Ethereum in a better position to handle future technological difficulties as well as requests for wider adoption.
