DOGS, a memecoin built on The Open Network (TON), has pledged to donate over 6 billion DOGS tokens, valued at approximately $4.5 million, to nonprofit organizations worldwide.
The initiative follows the launch of a dedicated charity portal in late November, designed to fund charitable causes through unclaimed airdrop tokens.
DOGS Memecoin to Donate $4.5 Million through Charity Portal
The platform invites registered nonprofits globally to apply for funding, aligning with DOGS’ mission to leverage cryptocurrency for meaningful social impact. According to a statement shared with Cointelegraph, “Over the course of the year, more than 6 billion DOGS tokens will be distributed to selected organizations after a thorough approval process.”
Partnership with Best Friends Animal Society
One of the first beneficiaries of this charitable effort is Best Friends Animal Society, a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to reducing homelessness among animals. DOGS has partnered with the organization, committing $150,000 to support its mission.
This funding will cover one month of care for adopted dogs and contribute to the nonprofit’s broader goal of ensuring all animal shelters in the U.S. achieve a no-kill rate of 90% or higher by 2025.
DOGS founder Andrew emphasized the importance of this collaboration, saying, “Our partnership with Best Friends Animal Society is a call to action for the crypto community to help achieve a future where every shelter reaches the 90% no-kill benchmark by 2025.”
Origin and Vision of DOGS
Launched as a Telegram bot, DOGS rewards users based on the age of their Telegram accounts, fostering a strong community within the messaging platform. The memecoin is inspired from “Spotty,” a memewhich is created by Telegram founder Pavel Durov.
Spotty is symbolic of resistance, harking back to a time in 2011 when Durov refused orders to censor posts by liberal thinkers and dissidents in Russia.
The DOGS token made its debut with a massive airdrop in September, reaching 17 million users. Since then, there have been over 53 million users of the Dogs Mini App on Telegram, of whom 42 million are eligible for the airdrop. This initiative aims to popularize memecoins, promote animal welfare, and expand cryptocurrency awareness within the Telegram ecosystem.
DOGS’ Price Actions
By tying its mission to charitable causes, DOGS is reshaping the narrative around memecoins, often dismissed as speculative assets. The allocation of unclaimed tokens to nonprofits underscores the project’s commitment to real-world impact.
DOGS is trading at $0.000743 and is up by more than 5% in the last 24 hours. The token is up by almost 10% in the last week. It holds a global market cap of $383.55 million and its 24-hour trading volume is 22%.
DOGS’ innovative charity portal offers a transparent and decentralized method for distributing funds to eligible organizations. This model could inspire similar initiatives in the crypto space, showcasing how blockchain technology can help noble causes.
As the project continues to gain traction, DOGS is setting a platform for how cryptocurrencies can bridge the gap between any kind of digital innovation and tangible social change.
