Anysphere, the parent firm behind the AI-powered code editor Cursor, has raised $900 million in new funding, increasing its worth to an astounding $9 billion, according to a report by FT.
The investment demonstrates the increasing interest of investors in software development workflow-enhancing solutions that use artificial intelligence.
Alameda Research: The Unexpected Story Behind Cursor’s Explosive Growth
One of the most unexpected side stories of Cursor’s extraordinary growth is about Alameda Research, its original backer.
The cryptocurrency trading company, which is a part of Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX investment empire, contributed only $200,000 to Cursor’s initial funding round in 2022.
But as part of the bankruptcy process following FTX’s demise, its liquidators sold that interest for the same sum of $200,000.
If the position had been kept, its current value may reach $500 million, which would be a 2,500x return. When the value of early-stage bets isn’t realized until after a company’s breakthrough success, the missed windfall emphasizes the difficulties and long-term expenses of distressed asset sales.

AI Firms Witness Rise in Funding
Nearly a third of the $314 billion in venture capital funding that was raised globally in 2024—more than $100 billion—went to AI firms, representing an 80% increase over 2023.
This increase broke prior records, including the peak year of 2021, and established AI as the top industry for venture capital.
The $6.6 billion raised by OpenAI, the $10 billion Series J from Databricks, and the $12 billion raised by xAI over two rounds were notable funding rounds. Additional substantial expenditures were made in the fields of robotics, healthcare, infrastructure, and defense.
