According to the outlet, the police report described how the impostor courier quickly dropped the act by brandishing a gun and tying the victim up with duct tape. It’s unclear whether the victim was hurt or if any arrests were made after the incident.

The audacious crime occurs at a time when cryptocurrency-related thefts appear to be on the rise. Attackers have reportedly targeted cryptocurrency investors in order to get access to accounts valued at millions of dollars.

A former LAPD officer and an alleged Israeli criminal are accused of kidnapping a young boy in Los Angeles and threatening to kill and waterboard him if he didn’t hand over his cryptocurrency.

Ben, 51, has been convicted of fraud twice and was previously deported to Israel, according to court papers.  The district attorney said during a hearing that Ben has “ties to the Israeli mafia.”

The incident also occurred months after a bitcoin investor was detained in Manhattan for allegedly imprisoning an Italian businessman in his opulent apartment in New York City for over two weeks.

The businessman reported to the police that he went to John Woeltz’s flat after arriving in New York on May 6.  After reportedly stealing his passport and personal gadgets, Woeltz demanded to be handed the businessman’s Bitcoin password.

Woeltz and another man reportedly took the businessman hostage and tortured him for more than two weeks when he refused. They allegedly shocked him with wires, placed a revolver to his head, and suspended him over the side of the five-story building.

Coming back to the original case, there are still a lot of mysteries around it, and whether the department decides to move forward with it is still to be seen.  However, with the growing crypto thefts and robberies, especially at gunpoint, where the risk to life is involved is growing his days go by.
