Kraken Acquires Breakout To Launch Global Prop Trading Program

Kraken has completed its acquisition of Breakout, a proprietary trading firm built on evaluation-based funding, and will roll out a global program that offers skilled traders access to as much as $200,000 in notional capital.

The exchange said Thursday that the deal, effective September 1, is designed to open trading opportunities to people who can prove their performance through testing rather than through financial backing alone.

How does the program work?

Under the model, traders first purchase and pass a rigorous evaluation. Those who qualify are given funded accounts that must remain above set drawdown limits.

If they succeed, they can keep up to 90% of the profits, with payouts available on demand. Individual accounts can access $100,000 in notional capital, while multiple accounts can be combined to reach the $200,000 ceiling.

The trading scope covers more than 50 cryptocurrency pairs. Contracts for Bitcoin and Ethereum will carry leverage of up to 5x, giving participants more room to build strategies.

The program will live within Kraken Pro, the company’s professional trading platform, creating a single entry point for eligible users.

Voices from Kraken and Breakout

Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Kraken, said the move aligns with a shift in the financial world. “Breakout gives us a way to allocate capital based on proof of skill rather than access to capital itself.

In a world that is rapidly shifting from who you know to what you know, we want to build systems that reward demonstrated performance, not pedigree,” he said.

Alex Miningham, co-founder and CEO of Breakout, described the acquisition as a natural pairing. “Breakout gives traders a performance-based starting point, and Kraken delivers the scale and tools to grow.”

“Together, both companies form a unified ecosystem that supports the full trader journey from education through independent capital deployment,” he said.

Sethi added that integrating Breakout is part of a larger vision, and he explained that the goal is to create infrastructure where traders can prove themselves, scale efficiently, and access earnings without barriers.

“This is how modern capital platforms should work. Transparent, programmable, and open to anyone with an edge,” he said.

What traders can expect

The evaluation process remains central to the system. Candidates must demonstrate skill in the initial test before receiving any allocation. If they break drawdown thresholds, they will need to requalify to continue trading. This model ensures that performance standards are upheld while limiting risk.

Breakout’s framework fits with Kraken’s ambition to merge opportunity with accountability. The rules create a merit-based structure that rewards strategy, discipline, and consistent results.

By combining Breakout’s evaluation model with Kraken’s global platform, the service gives traders access to scale that would otherwise be out of reach.

Building for the future

For Kraken, acquiring this company highlights the desire to diversify services beyond just an exchange. They are now touting themselves as not only a place to buy and sell crypto, but one in which trading careers can be cultivated as well.

This focus on skill-based capital allocation will likely appeal to seasoned as well as rookies wanting to enter the trading arena.

The partnership also shows how exchanges are progressing to provide more advanced functionality. Kraken, with leverage, funded accounts and structured assessments, is now in a rectangle where performance is valued more than the entry criteria.

The program is performance-oriented and rewards those who succeed, offering on-demand payouts and profit retention to 90%.
