The Plume Network team is mourning the loss of their co-founder and CTO, Eugene Y. Q. Shen. Earlier this week, Eugene passed away, leaving his friends and colleagues in shock.
He was known for his brilliance, curiosity, and the genuine care he put into every project.
The team shared that Eugene poured his heart into building Plume, its community, and the technology that powers onchain real-world assets. His absence is deeply felt, and thoughts are with his family and loved ones as everyone at Plume supports one another through this difficult time.
Career Milestones
Before helping launch Plume Network in January 2024, Eugene built a solid track record in engineering roles at leading tech companies.
From June 2020 to December 2021, he worked at Robinhood as a Software Engineer II, where he focused on enhancing trading features and improving platform stability for millions of users.
In February 2022, he joined dYdX in San Francisco as a Senior Software Engineer. Over nine months, he contributed to scaling decentralised finance offerings, ensuring the platform could meet the demands of a rapidly growing community.
In March 2023, Eugene became part of Beluga’s engineering team in Manhattan, working on tools that bridged user interfaces with complex backend systems. Each position helped shape his deep technical knowledge, his ability to mentor younger engineers, and his passion for open finance.
Vision for Plume Network
As co-founder and CTO of Plume Network, Eugene guided the development of a blockchain protocol designed to bring real-world assets onchain. He emphasised secure smart-contract design, clear code, and rigorous testing.
Under his leadership, the Plume team created an architecture that makes it easy for developers to tokenise real estate, commodities, and other tangible assets.
Eugene’s vision went beyond technology. He fostered a collaborative culture where developers could learn and grow together. His goal was to build a vibrant ecosystem where startups and established firms alike could access onchain solutions for real-world finance.
Strategic Integration with Allora Network
Recently, Plume Network announced a strategic partnership with Allora Network, a self-improving decentralised AI platform. This integration brings Allora’s collective intelligence into Plume’s ecosystem.
From day one of mainnet launch, projects building on Plume will have access to AI-driven insights for real-world asset valuation, pricing, and risk management. Initially, the focus will be on forecasting annual percentage yields for tokenised real-world assets.
By combining Plume’s reliable asset token framework with Allora’s AI inferences, the network aims to create a transparent and efficient market for real-world finance.
Ecosystem Fund and Innovation Support
To help accelerate adoption, Plume’s ecosystem fund will back a range of innovations in real-world asset finance.
A key focus of this fund is to support AI-powered applications, including those that leverage Allora’s inference models. Eugene believed that nurturing a broad range of use cases would strengthen the entire ecosystem and deliver real value to users.
Though Eugene’s passing leaves a profound gap, his work continues to guide Plume Network’s journey. The integration with Allora and the launch of the ecosystem fund reflect his vision of blending blockchain and AI to transform real-world finance.
