Cryptocurrency Password-Cracking Firm in Turmoil as Secret Co-Founder Faces Multiple Sexual Assault Allegations

A leading company specializing in cryptocurrency password cracking known as UNCIPHERED, faces an escalating turmoil because one of its hidden founders named Morgan Marquis-Boire now stands accused of multiple cases of sexual assault.

Although previously concealed, Marquis-Boire’s secret employment at the company revealed itself to create a widespread impact among its intelligence agency employees.

These individuals had vouched for Unciphered’s credibility as a potential asset to government agencies, only to discover that its leadership had concealed a troubling connection to a figure with a history of serious allegations.

The fallout has been swift, leading to employee resignations, outrage within the cybersecurity community, and growing concerns over the company’s transparency and ethical standing.

The Hidden Co-Founder and His Controversial Past

Marquis-Boire, originally from New Zealand and a former Google security engineer, was once a respected cybersecurity expert known for analyzing advanced spyware.

However, his reputation was shattered in 2017 when multiple women accused him of sexual assault, prompting him to disappear from the public eye as institutions cut ties with him.

Citizen Lab condemned the broader issue of sexual misconduct within the tech industry, describing a culture of discrimination, harassment, and abuse.

Despite these allegations, Marquis-Boire managed to secretly co-found Unciphered under the alias “Frank Davidson,” successfully concealing his true identity from many in the company until late 2023.

The revelation has severely tarnished Unciphered’s standing, particularly given its close ties to intelligence and cybersecurity professionals who had assumed they were working within a reputable organization.

Internal Turmoil and Leadership Resignations

The exposure of Marquis-Boire’s role at Unciphered triggered an immediate and intense backlash within the company.

Employees, particularly those with intelligence and government backgrounds, feared their professional reputations would be damaged by association.

Former FBI cybersecurity expert Jon Ellch led calls for immediate action, prompting urgent discussions among company leadership.

In response to mounting pressure, Unciphered’s CEO, Eric Michaud, resigned, and Marquis-Boire was officially forced to sever ties with the firm.

However, concerns over his lingering influence resurfaced in early 2024 when a package addressed to him arrived at Unciphered’s San Francisco office, fueling speculation that he may still have connections to the company.

The controversy has also cast doubt on Unciphered’s business model, which relies on trust and security to help clients recover lost cryptocurrency, two factors that are now under intense scrutiny.

Damage Control Efforts and an Uncertain Future

In an attempt to contain the fallout, Unciphered’s leadership has taken several steps to distance the company from Marquis-Boire.

His shares were officially bought out in February 2024, ensuring he no longer holds any financial or operational influence.

Additionally, CEO Michaud erased his LinkedIn presence and withdrew from public statements, suggesting a broader effort to manage the scandal’s impact.

To further shield its remaining employees, Unciphered removed all staff names from its website, citing security concerns.

In a public statement, the company assured clients that “no one publicly associated with Unciphered has access to company or client funds,” signaling an effort to restore confidence.

Despite these damage control measures, the severity of the scandal has left Unciphered with a long road ahead in regaining its credibility within the cybersecurity and cryptocurrency recovery sectors.
