David Balland, a co-founder of French cryptocurrency wallet startup Ledger SAS, was reportedly kidnapped from his home in central France and later freed following a police operation, Bloomberg reported

According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, the kidnapping occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, with Balland being held captive until Wednesday night.

The assailants demanded a significant ransom in cryptocurrency for his release.

Details of the Incident

Balland was abducted from his residence in the Cher department and transported to another location, where he was held captive. Authorities described the situation as “ultra-sensitive,” which led to a media blackout while efforts to secure his release were underway.

The national gendarmerie, under the direction of the Paris prosecutor’s office, worked discreetly for 48 hours to locate and rescue Balland.

Although Balland was freed unharmed, the Paris prosecutor’s office has not disclosed the amount of cryptocurrency ransom demanded or provided details about the police operation. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and no information has been released regarding the suspects involved.

Confusion Surrounding the Incident

While the Paris prosecutor confirmed Balland’s kidnapping and release, the story has sparked controversy and scepticism. Investigative journalist Gregory Raymond, co-founder of The Big Whale, expressed doubts about the veracity of the kidnapping claims, stating there was no concrete evidence to support the allegations. Despite these claims, the story gained significant traction within the cryptocurrency community.

Founded in Paris in 2014, Ledger SAS specializes in hardware wallets that allow cryptocurrency traders to securely store their assets. The company’s devices resemble USB drives and include advanced security features to protect against unauthorized access.

Ledger has been a significant player in the crypto ecosystem, valued at €1.3 billion in 2023 after raising approximately €100 million from investors, including Singapore’s True Global Ventures.

Implications for the Crypto Community

The incident highlights the risks associated with the cryptocurrency industry, where high-value individuals can become targets for criminal activities.

The demand for a crypto ransom also underscores the need for greater security measures and protocols for high-profile figures within the industry.
